Cursor Composer 2 Kimi connection: A hidden starting point

Cursor positioned Composer 2 as an elite tool capable of handling multi-file edits and complex codebase reasoning, keeping the exact architecture under wraps.

However, a developer named Fynn noticed something unusual while debugging the platform’s API requests. The system’s responses contained a glaring internal identifier: kimi-k2p5-rl-0317-s515-fast. This string effectively translated to Kimi K2.5 augmented with reinforcement learning. The evidence mounted when Moonshot AI’s Head of Pretraining, Yulun Du, publicly noted that Composer 2’s tokenizer was identical to Kimi’s.

Cursor’s Defense: Compute Ratios and Partnerships

Following a viral backlash across X and HackerNews, Cursor executives stepped in to control the narrative. VP of Developer Education Lee Robinson and Co-founder Aman Sanger publicly admitted the omission, calling it a “miss” to not mention the Kimi base from the start.

Robinson explained that while Kimi started the job, roughly three-quarters of the compute spent on the final model came from Cursor’s own rigorous pipelines. Kimi K2.5 uses a modified MIT license containing a very specific commercial clause: any product utilizing the model that exceeds 100 million monthly active users or $20 million in monthly revenue must prominently display “Kimi K2.5” within the user interface. Given Cursor’s massive enterprise penetration and paid user base, they almost certainly hit this revenue threshold. Hiding the foundation model behind a sleek IDE interface isn’t just an oversight; it potentially violates the spirit of a license designed to give upstream creators visibility.

This situation forces a reckoning for enterprise buyers. If you are designing software, managing Git branches, or deploying scalable apps for international clients, you need absolute certainty about the tools generating your codebase. The geopolitical reality of a top-tier US tech company silently relying on a Chinese open-source foundation adds a heavy layer of compliance and security risk, especially as federal agencies tighten AI procurement rules.
