Tips and Tricks to Solve NYT Strands Puzzles

If you’re new to the game, these strategies will help you how to play NYT Strands:

  • Start with common short words They help earn hints and get your brain warmed up. Look for plurals, prefixes or suffixes like “ING”, “ED”, or “ER”.
  • Scan the edges for spangrams Since spangrams always start and end on opposite sides, the best place to begin is by connecting edge-to-edge patterns.
  • Try Broad Theme Associations If the theme is “Kitchen Items,” don’t just look for tools, think about food, cleaning items or appliances.
  • Use Hints Wisely Don’t waste hints early. Try forming non-theme words first to earn hints, then use them later when you’re stuck.
  • Don’t Overthink It Sometimes, the most obvious words are right in front of you. Just start connecting letters and see what forms.

How to Play NYT Strands – Rules and Gameplay Explained

Every day brings you a brand new 6×8 letter grid and hidden words in it, that all connect to a common theme. Your mission is to uncover them.

Basic Rules

  • Words must be at least four letters long.
  • You can move in any direction: horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
  • Letters must be connected, no skipping tiles.
  • No reuse of letters within the same word.
  • Theme words are always real words no abbreviations, acronyms or slang.

Hints and Non-Theme Words

  • For every three valid but non-theme words you find, you earn a Hint.
  • A hint highlights the tiles of one theme word on the board.
  • Use hints wisely, they can help crack tough puzzles.

The Spangram

  • It Touches two opposite edges of the board.
  • Relates directly to the theme.
  • Often unlocks the logic behind the other theme words.

Once the Spangram is discovered, all other theme words become easier to spot.

Real Example of a How To Play NYT Strands

While NYT Strands is still in beta, you can enjoy it for free either on the official website or through the NYT Games app. Here’s how to play NYT Strands:

  1. When you launch a puzzle, the daily theme appears on the left, while the letter grid is displayed on the right.
  2. To play, simply connect at least four letters to form a word. On desktop, you can click or drag your mouse through the letters. If you’re on mobile, just tap or swipe your finger to build the word.

  1. To submit any word, whether it’s a theme word or not, simply click or tap the last letter of the word. If it’s a valid theme word, it’ll light up in blue and added to your solved list. Non-theme words won’t be highlighted but will count toward earning hints. You get one for every three valid non-theme words.

  1. Once you know how to connect letters then start exploring the grid by linking as many as possible. You have to uncover words thats match the puzzle’s theme. For example, if the theme is “You Got That Right” and you find the word “EXACT” that’s a good sign you’re on the right track. If you find more words, the grid updates and your solved word count will be increased.

  1. If you can’t find more theme-related words then try looking for unrelated four-letter words just to fill the hint bar. After getting a hint, tap the Hint button and one of the theme words will be outlined with a dashed blue border. You can use multiple hints in a puzzle, but you need to earn each one by finding three non-theme words.

  1. Keep using hints between your own logic and system to discover all theme words. As you cracking theme words, the grid will shrink and you’ll start reaching the Spangram.

  1. At this stage, you’ll notice a word stretching from one edge of the board to another, that’s your Spangram. Once you trace it, the word gets highlighted in yellow and the puzzle is complete!

  1. After solving the puzzle, you can tap View Results to see your stats like how many hints you used. You can also tap the Share button to copy your result in emoji-style format just like Wordle and show your victory.
