What is NYT Connections?

Created by New York Times editor Wyna Liu, the game gives you a 4×4 grid — that’s 16 words in total and your task is to group them into four sets of four that share a common connection. The groups get tougher as you go, starting with yellow (easiest), then green, blue, and ending with purple (hardest).
What makes it fun (and sometimes frustrating) is how sneaky the categories can be. Some are obvious, while others use wordplay or double meanings to throw you off. You get four chances to solve all four groups, and the categories get harder as you go from yellow to purple.
